TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball team earned a non-conference series win over LSU-Alexandria after taking 8-6 and 9-8 wins on Saturday at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (6-3) started the day with the two-run win that saw them explode for six runs on no hits in the sixth inning. The Patriots, who would score eight runs on only two hits throughout the game, took advantage of two Generals errors in the inning and four walks and two hit-by-pitches. Reese Read (1-0) earned the win for the Patriots in the game in relief of starter Tyler Stallings after allowing only one earned run in two innings. Read, who has now made three appearances this season, struck out one and did not walk a batter. Stallings would strikeout two, but would surrender five earned run in his third start of the season. Stallings came into the game having not allowed a run in 10 1/3 innings and with a 2-0 record and did not receive a decision on Saturday. Chad Hayes would earn his first save of the season after striking out five over two innings and now has 14 saves in his career. A junior, Hayes had 13 saves last season and has started this season with a 0.00 ERA and nine strikeouts through five appearances and six innings of work.

Graham Welch went 1-for-3 with a leadoff triple in the first inning and Alex Bishop went 1-for-3 with a two-run double.  Welch now has two triples this this season and is hitting .324.

Down a run in the ninth in the series finale after the Generals had scored six runs in the eighth to come back from nowhere, the Patriots would rally to score two in the ninth and walked off with a win after a wild pitch scored Bishop from third. The ninth-inning rally started with Sam Lane singling up the middle and scoring on a Braxton Hollenshead double to left field. Bishop, who walked in between the single and double, was at third base after the double and jogged home after LSU-Alexandria’s pitcher threw his first pitch to Trenton Buchhorn to the backstop.

UT Tyler finished the second game of the series with 11 hits, including two-hit performances from Lane, Hollenshead, Buchhorn and Dalton Smith. Buchhorn, who had a seven-game hitting streak end when he didn’t get hit in the first game on Saturday, went 2-or-4 with two RBI for the Patriots in the finale and now has a team-leading 14 hits and eight RBI. Bishop leads the Patriots with 10 RBI and has also scored 11 runs, while Lane leads the team with 13 runs scored through nine games. Welch is the only Patriot to have reached base in all nine games this season.

Hayes (1-0) earned the win for the Patriots in the game after getting three outs in the bottom of the ninth without allowing a hit or run a game after he earned the save. Starting pitcher Cason Adams did not factor into the decision despite exiting with a 7-2 lead after striking out five and scattering five hits through six innings.

The Patriots will return to action against Centenary at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with their first road game of the season in Shreveport before returning home to host UMBH in a three-game set next weekend to open American Southwest Conference play.
