TYLER – Cason Adams struck out seven and earned the win in a one-run game and Tyler Stallings fanned eight in a blow-out victory as UT Tyler opened the baseball season with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Dallas on Saturday at Irwin Field.

Adams earned a 2-1 complete-game win over the Crusaders (2-3) in the season-opener by limiting UD to four hits and not walking a single batter. Stallings earned his win in drastically different fashion with the Patriots exploding for a 16-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader with freshman Kelly Dorsett highlighting the offensive production by going 3-for-3 with four RBI.

The three-game set will resume at 2 p.m. on Sunday between the Patriots and Crusaders at Irwin Field.

The Patriots were limited to three hits in the opener, but would take the victory in the seventh inning after Briley Barnwell scored from third on an error by the Crusaders’ first baseman who couldn’t handle a throw from the UD catcher on an attempted pickoff. Barnwell had led off the seventh inning with a walk with the game tied at 1-1 and moved to second on a pinch-hit single by Ben Romines. After a balk call, Graham Welch was intentionally walked to load the bases to set up the throwing error that would end the first game of the day at 2-1.

Brady McCoy drove in the first run of the game for the Patriots in the fourth inning with a two-out single to center field to score Trenton Buchhorn who had led the inning off with a single to left. McCoy, Buchhorn and Romines each had singles to account for the three hits for the Patriots, while Adams was cruising through on the mound. Adams improved to 9-3 over the past two seasons and now has 82 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings in his career for the Patriots after his fifth career complete game.

Dorsett had a home run, double and single in the game that saw the Patriots have 12 hits and lead 16-3 after five innings before the two teams went scoreless over the next three frames. Stallings would throw 4 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run before giving way to the bullpen which saw Jacob Clark, Cade Suggs, Travis Payne and Chad Hayes add six more strikeouts in the nine-inning game.

Welch and Buchhorn each had two-hit games in the night cap with Buchhorn having a run-scoring double for the first run of a seven-run third inning for the Patriots that also saw a two-run double from Welch. Michael Caruso finished the game with three RBI, including a third inning RBI on a ground out to short stop to score Dorsett and then a two-RBI single in the fifth to take the score to 16. Sam Lane finished the game 1-for-3 with a triple to take his program-record triple total to 13. Lane’s triple in the third inning drove in Buchhorn who had doubled following a leadoff walk from Braxton Hollenshead which would start a seven-run inning that would put the game away.

Michael Blevins is scheduled to make the start for the Patriots on Sunday in the series finale at Irwin Field. Blevins, a right-handed senior, enters the game with an 11-6 career record and has 94 career strikeouts.
