ARLINGTON – Jamon Copeland earned his 100th career win as a head coach with UT Tyler defeating Arlington Baptist College 82-67 in a non-conference match up where six Patriots scored in double-digits with Demarcus Metcalf, Deon Rodgers and Ty Davis leading the way with 14 points each. Rodgers also grabbed 10 rebounds to give himself a double-double Thursday at the J. Frank Norris Memorial Auditorium.

The Patriots (9-7) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory over ABC, shooting 47.4 percent from the field and knocking down nine 3-pointers with Davis going 3-for-4 and Metcalf 2 of 2 from beyond the 3-point line.

“I was really proud of our defensive effort tonight, limiting their paint touches and holding them to 29 percent shooting for the night,” Copeland said. “On the offensive end, we did a great job grabbing 22 offensive rebounds.  Deon, Melvin, and DeMarcus did a phenomenal job on the glass tonight. We have to have that same effort on the glass Saturday versus an extremely athletic Belhaven team.”

It was a battle with the Patriots leading 42-33 at the half before ABC was able to fight back and tie the game 52-52 with 14:38 remaining in the second half. Arlington Baptist took the lead 57-55 with 12:50 left before Latigo Collins knocked down a jumper to tie it up again. 20 seconds later Darryn York is fouled and makes the free-throw to give the Patriots a 58-57 lead. From there, UTT started to run away with it with York scoring 12 points, Dadrian Taylor and Joey Cuervo scoring 10 each followed by Melvin Anthony scoring six.

The Patriots were able to grab 49 defensive rebounds, 71 total to secure the ball and give the team an edge over ABC who were only able to grab 41 rebounds.

Copeland served as head coach at Ave Maria University in Florida from 2009-2013 before coming to UT Tyler where he is now in his third season. The Patriots were able to make tonight’s win a historic one and get Copeland his 100th career win as a head coach.

The men will be back in action this Saturday at 3 p.m. where they will host Belhaven University during basketball alumni weekend.

“We are really excited about being back at home after being on the road the past five games,” Copeland said. “Saturday will be a special day for the program with around 20 former Patriots coming back to town to celebrate alumni weekend with us.”
