TYLER – UT Tyler senior Ryan Cheatham struck out five and threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Patriots to a 7-0 win over East Texas Baptist on Friday in their American Southwest Conference opener at Irwin Field.

The Patriots (8-3) have now won five in a row after opening ASC play with the win, while ETBU is now 1-3 in conference play and 7-7 overall.

Cheatham (2-1) would allow only four hits in his seven innings of work and has still not allowed an earned run through 24 1/3 innings of work.

The Patriots finished the game with 11 hits, including five players having two hits each. Blake Wilson, Blake Maddox, Jordan Antley, Jared Pauley and Bowie Farris each had two hits, while Josh Burns had one. Maddox and Antley each had doubles for the Patriots who improved to 4-3 on their home.

UT Tyler jumped out quick on the Tigers with a run in the first off an error and then scored two more in the second with Jared Pauley hitting an RBI single up the middle and Bowie Farris following with an RBI single of his own to center field. Three innings would go by with the Patriots owning the 3-0 lead before the Patriots broke the game open with three more runs in the sixth. The three-run sixth started with an Alex Bishop walk and Ben Romines getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Bishop would score on an error and then Romines scored on a Jordan Antley single up the middle. The sixth run of the game for the Patriots scored on a balk with Farris coming home and they would add the seventh run in the seventh inning when Blake Maddox came in on a passed ball after leading the inning off with a double to left center field.

Chris Stodolka and Ethan Cherry closed out the game with one inning of relief each for the Patriots, while Blake Corbin (2-3) took the loss after surrendering four earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

The Patriots and Tigers will continue the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday with the presentation of the Issac Tijerina Award to be presented before the start of the games. Additionally, the UT Tyler baseball program will honor its alumni before the start of the second game.
