AUSTIN – UT Tyler junior Tyler Uhlig owns the opening-lead at the Linda Lowery Invitational after shooting a 4-under-par 67 while the Patriots are second in the team standings after Monday’s 18 at the River Place Country Club.

The 36-hole tournament will resume and conclude on Tuesday with the Patriots scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m. in the Hill Country. Concordia leads the tournament with a 293 team score, while the Patriots are second at 300 entering the final round.

“Tyler played well for us today,” UT Tyler coach Michael McMunn said. “He was able to stay away from the big mistakes. I’m really proud of his round. I'm looking forward to seeing some improvements from all the guys. Three of our five here have never played this course before this event so I think we have a better feel of the course now. We mainly just have to make sure we take it shot to shot and have more focus on that.”

A Magnolia native, Uhlig was near perfect in his opening round of the spring season where he made five bogeys and bogeyed only one hole. His 4-under was the only sub-par round on the day, giving him a four-stroke lead over Concordia’s Logan Young who is in second after shooting an even-par round of 71. He was 4-under on the back-9 at River Place after shooting even-par on the front side of the course.

UT Tyler senior Sam Hill is lurking around the leaderboard after he shot a 76 in his first round, but is in the top-20 and within striking distance as he’s shown throughout his career with the Patriots. An Orlando native, he made only one birdie on Monday in his round of 5-over. Trystan Perkins is 25th overall entering Tuesday’s final round after carding a 77, while Harris Butler and Hayden Montoya each shot opening-round 80s.

In his first season with UT Tyler after transferring from McLennan College, Uhlig is coming off a fall season where he competed in four events for the Patriots with a scoring average of 72.83. He recorded a runner-up finish at the Tournament Town Preview where he shot a 72-72-72 – 216 and would also finish 14th at the Gordin Classic for his two top finishes. His round of 67 is a career-best which topped his second round of the Gordin Classic.
