Friday, February 2, 2018

JOPLIN, Missouri – UT Tyler senior Kaylee Prather shattered the previous school long jump record with a distance of 17-feet, 11.5 inches and Cody Benton extended his previous program long jump record at 21-feet, 11.5 on Friday at the Missouri Southern Lion Open at the Mercy Indoor Track. The two-day event will continue on Saturday with multiple UT Tyler student-athletes competing.

An Elysian Field native and All-American softball player at UT Tyler, Prather’s long jump of 5.47 meters gave her the best long jump in program history and was only topped by NCAA Division II jumpers at the Lion Open. In the weight throw, Whitney Simmons won the event with a throw of 19.38 as an unattached competitor while her brother, Nikelas Simmons, finished 18th overall on the men’s side with a throw of 14.43 meters.

In the men’s long jump, Benton leaped 6.69 meters which broke his own school record of 6.66 meters that he set two weeks ago at the UCO Open in Norman, Oklahoma. Benton was 15th overall in the men’s long jump on Friday with Sedeekie Edie winning the event with a long jump of 7.41 meters for Lincoln.

Prather would also run a 8.10 in the 60-meter preliminaries which was the 18th fastest time, while Kyra Winn ran an 8.82 and Ashton Hawkins a 9.27 in the event. Click the link belows for Friday's results and the heat sheets for Saturday from the meet in Missouri.
