TYLER – Josh Tatum drove into the lane and kicked out a pass to a wide-open Melvin Anthony who hit a 3-pointer from the corner with one minute remaining to give UT Tyler a lead it wouldn’t give up in a 95-93 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at the Herrington Patriot Center. Tatum and Anthony both had double-doubles in the game for the Patriots, Anthony going for 30 points and 10 rebounds and Tatum contributing 18 points and 11 assists in the win.
Anthony’s shot was the 15th 3-pointer by the Patriots in the game which tied for the second most in a game in program history and gave the team a 94-91 lead with 1:01 on the clock. UMHB (7-4, 2-3 ASC) would get it to 94-93 on a Brian Long layup on the next possession, but would commit two turnovers in the final 10 seconds to not give themselves a shot to tie the game.
UT Tyler (7-2, 2-2 ASC) improved to 3-0 at home with the win and will return to action quickly with a 1 p.m. non-conference game against Colorado College at the HPC. The Patriots will take momentum into the game after an impressive shooting performance where they shot 58.3 percent from the field and were 15-for-25 (62.5 percent) on 3-pointers against the Cru.
Anthony matched a career-high with 30 points and had 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season where he was 6-for-7 on 3-pointers and 11-for-15 from the field. He also adding five assists, three blocks and a steal and matched his 30-point effort from last year in a triple-overtime win over Hardin-Simmons. Johnell Lane also had six 3-pointers in the game and finished with 20 points, while Tatum recorded a double-double with 11 assists and 18 points.
Cameron Frank and Emeka Obukwelu each had 11 points and Xavier Fogle scored five points. Fogle’s five points were the only points from the bench for the Patriots in the game, while UMHB had 23 points off its bench. Sam Moore led UMHB with 25 points and Demarius Cross had 20 points and eight rebounds.
UT Tyler will host Colorado College on Sunday before hosting Concordia at 4 p.m. on Tuesday before going on holiday break.
