TYLER – The UT Tyler baseball program has announced its 2018 schedule which has 40 regular-season games with 21 at Irwin Field as the Patriots look to win their fourth straight American Southwest Conference championship.
The Patriots are coming off a 39-9 record in head coach Brent Porche’s first season leading the program, including a 21-3 conference record and a 19-2 record on their home field. UT Tyler hosted and won their third straight and sixth overall ASC tournament title and then hosted the NCAA Division III West Regional Tournament.
UT Tyler will open its season with six straight home games, including a three-game series against La Verne before hosting the Clements Fluids Classic from Feb. 16-18 at Irwin Field. The Patriots will also host East Texas Baptist in their ASC-opening series on March 2-3 in a rematch of the conference tournament finals where UTT won to clinch the championship. The season-opening series against La Verne is set for Feb. 8-10 with one game per day at Irwin Field.
“I believe we have a very challenging schedule,” Porche said. “We draw the top four finishing teams in the ASC from 2017 on our conference schedule, but we are excited all of those matchups are here at Irwin Field. We also have a very challenging non-conference schedule with four games against Centenary College who won the SCAC Conference last year and matchups against top west region opponents Laverne, Trinity and Whitworth.”
The program will host the three-day Clements Fluids Classic from Feb. 16-18 with games against Whitworth, Trinity and Centenary at Irwin Field. The event will also feature neutral field games at Irwin Field along with some games in Marshall.
“We are extremely excited about the Clements Classic as always,” Porche said. “Mike Clements, Chase Tarrant and the whole Clements family are such great supporters of UT Tyler and of our baseball program. We are excited to bring some of the best baseball programs in the country to Tyler in Whitworth University, Centenary College, Trinity University and ETBU. It will be some exciting baseball early in the year.”
The ASC schedule has the Patriots hosting series against ETBU, UT Dallas, Louisiana College and Concordia and the team will also host Millsaps, Centenary and Southwestern in midweek non-conference games. UT Tyler’s first road trip will teak them to Jackson, Mississippi for a single game against Millsaps on Feb. 20 before heading south to Texas Lutheran for a three-game series from Feb. 23-24 in Seguin before they play on Feb. 27 at Centenary in Shreveport. The team will also play road games at Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Southwestern, Mary Hardin-Baylor and LeTourneau to finish off the regular season in Longview.
“I’m excited to see how this group of guys comes together throughout the year and what they can accomplish,” Porche said.
