TYLER – The UT Tyler women’s basketball team opened its season by earning an 83-54 non-conference win over Howard Payne with Alex Kochner recording a double-double and six players scoring in double figures on Friday at the Herrington Patriot Center.
The Patriots (1-0) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 31 points against the Yellow Jackets (0-1) who were limited to 27.7 percent shooting in the game. UT Tyler hit nine 3-pointers, owned a 53-31 rebounding advantage and finished the game shooting 42.4 percent in its first game of the 15th season in program history.
Kochner led the team with 12 rebounds and added 12 points to start her senior season, while Demi Cumby led the team with 15 points and would also grab six rebounds. Cumby, a senior from Athens, was 5-for-8 from the field and also hit two 3-pointers. Brittany Johnson scored 14 points after going 4-for-8 on 3-pointers, while Samantha Odom scored a career-best 13 points and Carissa Spiker had 12. Odom and Spiker would also finish the game with nine rebounds each.
UT Tyler guard Alexus Bertrand knocked down two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points to give the Patriots six players in double figures, while HPU’s Valarie Matlock scored 21 and was the only Yellow Jacket in double figures. Kochner would also add five assists and two steals and Bertrand had five assists and three steals. Johnson, who played 14 games in the 2015-16 but missed last season, recorded her career-best in scoring, 3-pointers made and also grabbed three rebounds.
UT Tyler returns to action with a pair of games at the Trinity Thanksgiving Tournament in San Antonio starting with Cornell College on Saturday, Nov. 25 before playing No. 7-ranked Trinity on Sunday, Nov. 26. The Patriots will be back home where they will host Centenary on Nov. 29 at the HPC.
