Friday, September 29, 2017

TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s golf team remains the No. 1-ranked team in the Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll after opening the season with a win at the Tournament Town Preview and a runner-up finish at the Rhodes College Classic. The Patriots, who received 16 of 20 first-place votes in the poll, were the top-ranked program in the preseason poll and remain atop the rankings following winning the prestigious Tournament Town Preview this week on the same course where the NCAA Division III National Championships will be played in May.

UT Tyler is led by Sam Hill, George Toone, DJ Godoy, Tyler Uhlig and Trystan Perkins who will compete at the Gordin Collegiate Classic on Sunday and Monday at the Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. The third of four tournaments on the Patriots’ fall schedule will have 36 holes on Sunday before the final 18 on Monday and will have the team competing once again against some of the top DIII programs in the nation.

“I’m pleased with how we have played so far,” UT Tyler coach Michael McMunn said. “I’m more pleased with the maturity and composure we have had. We are in a good place right now headed for our next event. The guys are excited to go play an event we have never been to before and play against some of the best competition on our level.”

A senior from Orlando, Hill is a returning all-American who is leading the team with a 72.33 scoring average and a pair of top-10 finishes to start the season. Hill finished sixth overall at Rhodes with a 71-76-67 – 214 and then took 10th at the Tournament Town Preview with a 68-74-78 – 220 on his scorecard in Greensboro. Uhlig is coming off a runner-up finish at the Tournament Town Preview where he was even-par 72-72-72 – 216 after finishing 25th in his first tournament with the Patriots. A transfer from McClennan, Uhlig has a 72.67 scoring average through six rounds while Godoy is at 73.33. Godoy finished 10th in the first tournament of the season in Mississippi before shooting 69-76-79 – 224 last week in North Carolina. Toone, a returning all-American, has a 74.33 scoring average to start his senior season and Perkins is at 73.67 to begin his sophomore season.

Huntingdon moved up three spots to second. Emory tallied two first-place ballots to climb three rungs to No 3. Illinois Wesleyan was fourth while Methodist checked in at No. 5. Guilford received one first-place vote, despite dropping two spots to sixth. Concordia (TX) jumped from No. 18 to No. 7 and is followed by Wittenberg, Washington & Lee, and Sewanee.

No. 18 Chapman, who earned the remaining first-place vote, led a contingent of poll newcomers that included Southwestern (TX) (#20), La Verne (#21), Rochester (#22), Ohio Wesleyan (#T25), and Willamette (#T25). Christopher Newport, Gustavus Adolphus, Skidmore, St. Thomas (MN), and Williams fell from the ranking.
