TYLER – The No. 5-ranked UT Tyler baseball team earned a 15-6 series opening win over McMurry on Friday at Irwin Field with Gunnar Quick leading the team with four hits and Ryan Cheatham securing his eighth win of the season and remained unbeaten.
The Patriots (29-5, 17-2 ASC) are now 17-2 at home this season with Cheatham improving to 8-0 after allowing only two runs through five innings of work. UT Tyler finished the game with 15 hits and scored five runs in the fifth inning on four hits to take the lead after trailing 2-1 going to the bottom of the inning. Quick went 4-for-6 with three RBI for a career-best hit total, while Daniel Williams, Ben Romines, Josh Burns and Jared Pauley each had two hits for the Patriots. Dalton Smith and Blake Wilson drove in three runs on one hit each. Smith had his first RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and hit another sac fly in the fifth.
Williams hit a run-scoring double in the fifth and blasted his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning. A senior from Katy, Williams now leads the Patriots with 38 RBI and is hitting .431 through 34 games. Romines had a triple and single, while Pauley came into the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh but would do his work offensively with a bunt single to lead off the seventh and then drove in a run in the eighth with a double to left center.
Kyle Broussard and Tim Hunter both walked four times in the game to tie the UT Tyler single-game record. Broussard also went 1-for-1 with a run-scoring single. Hunter now has a national-leading 45 walks this season and has walked four times in a game three times this season.
Cheatham had two strikeouts and worked around three walks and five hits and exited with a 7-2 lead. Sam Sitton threw 1 1/3 innings, while Miles Thomas finished off the seventh with two outs and Chad Hayes and Max Page threw one inning each. Hayes had two strikeouts in the eighth inning. Cheatham leads the Patriots with his eight wins and has a 2.59 ERA with 41 strikeouts through 62 2/3 innings this season.
UT Tyler and McMurry (12-23, 6-13 ASC) will resume the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a doubleheader at Irwin Field. The Patriots will honor their 14-player senior class between games.
