TYLER – Demarcus Metcalf had 17 points and nine rebounds and Melvin Anthony recorded the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lift UT Tyler to a 71-65 non-conference win over Southwestern in a Christmas Classic finale on Wednesday where the Patriots trailed by as many as 13 but fought back to sweep the season series over the Pirates.

The Patriots (7-3) improved to 5-0 in the Herrington Patriot Center this season with the victory where they hit nine 3-pointers and went 18-for-25 from the free-throw line. The nine 3-pointers followed 10 from beyond the arc by the Patriots on Tuesday in the win over No. 25-ranked Texas Lutheran which was the season-high for the team.

“Our defense in the second half won the game for us,” UT Tyler head coach Jamon Copeland said. “We had a stretch in the second half where we got 12 stops in 14 possessions. When we get stops, it really gets our offense going because we are able to attack the defense before they get set.  Then we put them in difficult rotations which opens up the 3-point shot for us.”

Metcalf, who also led the Patriots with 23 points against TLU, is now averaging 12.6 points per game this season and is shooting 40.5 percent on 3-pointers where he leads the team with 15. On Wednesday, he hit three 3-pointers and would also have three steals to go along with nine rebounds. One more rebound and he would have recorded his second double-double of the season with the first coming with 10 points and a season-best 14 rebounds against Howard Payne.

While Metcalf just missed a double-double, Anthony secured his with seven rebounds on the defensive side of the court and three offensive boards to go along with 10 points. He had an efficient game by going 4-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Darryn York also had a season-best game by going for 13 points and also adding three rebounds and three assists. A junior guard, York was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and also hit three shots from the field, while Anthony Gonzales would score in double-figures with 12 points after hitting three 3-pointers. Gonzales is the only Patriot to score in double-figures in all 10 games this season and leads the team with 17.9 points per game.

UT Tyler is now 3-1 against SCAC opponents this season after sweeping the Pirates (3-8). The Patriots also earned a 94-90 win over SU back on Nov. 21 in Georgetown for their first win of the season. UT Tyler will now host LeTourneau at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the HPC in a rematch from two weeks ago where the YellowJackets pulled out an 83-68 win in Longview.
