TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s basketball team returns to action against Southwestern at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Robertson Center in Georgetown.

The Patriots (0-1) are coming off a season-opening loss at Texas Lutheran last Sunday, while the Pirates (1-0) earned a win over Howard Payne last Friday and will host Hardin-Simmons on Thursday before playing UT Tyler on Saturday. UT Tyler and Southwestern met in a New Year’s Eve game last season with the Pirates taking a 73-71 decision at the Herrington Patriot Center.

Anthony Gonzales led the Patriots with 16 after hitting four shots and going 8-for-9 from the field at Texas Lutheran, while Joey Cuervo recorded 11 point off the bench with a team-high three 3-pointers. Gonzales led the Patriots with 11 points in last season’s game against Southwestern and finished his junior season averaging 13.4 points per game. A senior from Killeen, Gonzales had eight points with six coming from the free-throw line on Monday in an exhibition at Texas State.

UT Tyler and Southwestern will meet one more time this season after this weekend with the Pirates traveling to Tyler to play on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the HPC.

Quote || Jamon Copeland, UT Tyler head coach

On UT Tyler’s season-opener at Texas Lutheran last Sunday:

"We wanted our opening game to really test us to see where we are early so we scheduled the SCAC Champion and NCAA Tournament team TLU. They shoot it really well as a team and made some really tough 3s in bunches.  It was a game of runs and we never got rattled when they went on a run. We kept battling and fighting throughout the game but our inability to finish at the rim and finish possessions with a defensive rebound ultimately cost us. We are going to keep getting better with our execution and willingness to compete.  They are a really fun group to coach."
