UT Tyler student-athletes set to improve recreational trails

Thursday, August 27, 2015

TYLER – Teamwork and campus pride will be on display on Friday and Saturday along the 6.5 miles of recreational trails on the UT Tyler campus as the Patriot athletic programs come together to add new sections of trails, clear debris and install erosion controls.

“This will be a great opportunity for our athletes to help us beautify and preserve the campus trails,” said Herrington Patriot Center Director Bob Helper. “We have such a unique campus here at UT Tyler with all the nature we have, so to provide access to the trails is important. We’ll be putting in erosion controls and opening up new trails. It’s going to be a much-needed improvement project for our trails around campus. I’m very excited about this opportunity.”

The recreational trails provide students and the public opportunities for nature walks, biking, intermural races, disc golf and many other avenues to exploration. The trails will also host three collegiate cross country meets and two high school meets this year. Representatives from each athletic program will work shifts throughout the next two days in a collaborative service effort.

“It’s going to be really great to see all the athletes working on a common cause to help improve the campus they go to school at,” Helper said.

Work on the recreational trails will begin at 1:45 p.m. on Friday.
