TYLER, Texas -- Birmingham-Southern College's Ronni
Ferris pitched her second complete game within a 10-hour span Saturday as she
helped lead the Panthers to 1-0 win over Redlands (Calif.) in an elimination
game at the Tyler Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.
Ferris scattered four hits over seven innings and struck
out four Bulldog hitters to improve to 2-0 at the Tyler Regional this weekend.
After giving up only one run over 14 innings Saturday, Ferris lowered her ERA
to 0.76 for the tournament.
Erin Lopez knocked home the game's only run with two outs
in the bottom of the first inning when she singled home Bethany Fronk. Fronk
drew a one-out walk to reach base, stole second and then moved to third on
Brittany Berkopec's groundout.
The Panthers advance to the loser's bracket semifinal
game against host UT Tyler, which lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-1 on
Saturday. Birmingham-Southern (36-10) and UT Tyler meet at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Birmingham-Southern's triumph over Redlands (32-13)
avenged the Panthers' opening-round contest which saw the Bulldogs prevail 6-4.
Redlands pitcher Kayla Uphold did everything she could to
keep the Bulldogs in the game, pitching all six innings while striking out
three batters and scattering six hits. She also went 1-for-3 in the game.
Uphold took the loss in both of Redlands' setbacks
Saturday despite giving up only one earned run over 14 innings. After pitching
every inning of the tournament, Uphold finished with a 1-2 record and 1.02 ERA
during the Tyler Regional.
Ferris allowed only one baserunner over the first four
innings and at one point retired seven batters in a row. Uphold's leadoff
triple to open the fifth inning broke the streak, but after getting two batters
on base with one out, Ferris retired the side to keep the Bulldogs off the
scoreboard.
Ferris, Ashley Bice, Danielle Rucker and Joanna Jernigan
all collected base hits in the game for the Panthers. Freshman shortstop Linda
Park went 2-for-3 for Redlands.
