NORMAN, Okla. – Matthew Cecotti established a new UT Tyler 1-mile Indoor record by running a 4:35.30 and Cody Benton set a new long jump mark to highlight the Patriots performances at the season-opening UCO Open on Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Track.

Cecotti finished seventh overall in the 1-mile race, while sophomore Nathan Adams ran a 4:43.60 for 10th in the event. The previous UT Tyler record was 4.36.42 set by Will McIlroy last season. Victoria Nix would clear 10-feet and finished fifth in the pole vault for the Patriots and Cody Benton was fifth in the men’s long jump with a leap of 6.66 meters (21-10.25). Benton's mark topped Christian Kearney's previous UT Tyler record of 6.39 meters in 2015.

In the finals of the 600-yard run, Mack Hamilton ran a 1:22.3 and Ed Miller a 1:23.86 for 19th and 20th, respectively in the event while Zach Richardson ran a 7.08 in the 60-meter which put him 10th at the meet. Mark Phillips ran a 23.75 and Kade Trompler a 23.76 for the Patriots in the 200-meter dash. Richardson’s time was a personal best and the second best 60 time in program history behind Kevonte Shaw who ran a 6.98 at the University of Houston in 2015.

Competing as an unattached athlete, UT Tyler three-time national champion Whitney Simmons won the Weight Throw with a distance of 18.04 meters while junior Lexie Petty finished 14th in the event with a throw of 12.71 meters. On the men’s side, Nikelas Simmons led the Patriots with a distance of 14.01 meters and Daulton Coleman had a throw of 12.07.

UT Tyler will be back in action in two weeks when the Patriots travel to compete in Joplin, Missouri at the Southern Missouri Lion Open before returning to Norman a week later.
