Godwin, Simmons win events at UWL Eagle Open

LA CROSSE, Wisc. – Matthew Godwin won the javelin event with a personal best of 57.04 meters at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagle Open and Whitney Simmons continued her dominance by winning the hammer with a throw of 62.78 meters.

Zach Richardson ran a 50.11 to finish second in the 400-meter dash and Jordan Grubb was ninth in the event with a time of 55.46 for the Patriots who added the trip to Wisconsin to attempt to qualify in events for the upcoming NCAA Division III National Championships in Ohio.

Logan Houser turned in a time of 1:58.47 for 10th in the 800-meters and Richardson ran a 22.50 in the 200 for fourth in a 18-athlete race.

Simmons is the reigning NCAA DIII National Champion in the hammer and has led the nation throughout the season. A senior from White House, Simmons established a new NCAA DIII record two weeks ago at the University of Houston with a mark of 63.08 meters. Godwin won the American Southwest Conference title a month ago in the javelin and is now second all-time in program history with his throw of 57.04 which is only behind that of Ed Palencia who threw 65.10 meters in the 2013 NCAA DIII Championships for the Patriots. Godwin, a junior from Hallsville, had a previous top mark of 56.59 meters last season at Commerce.

The 2017 NCAA DIII National Championships are scheduled for May 25-27 in Geneva, Ohio.
