Men's Track & Field Receives ASC Honor

RICHARDSON, Texas -- The University of Texas at Tyler men's track and field team was honored as one of the winners of the American Southwest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship Award for 2011 spring sports, the conference office announced recently.

Teams from East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, Howard Payne, LeTourneau, Louisiana College, McMurry, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, Sul Ross State were also honored. 

The award, in its fourth academic year, honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) from the conference’s 15 member institutions vote on the recipients.

Howard Payne (West Division) and LeTourneau (East Division) took the baseball sportsmanship honors, while Sul Ross State (West) and East Texas Baptist (East) took the awards in softball. Louisiana College (men) and McMurry (women) were the SAAC golf award winners. In tennis, Mary Hardin-Baylor (men’s West), Louisiana College (men’s East), Hardin-Simmons (women’s West) and Mississippi College (women’s East) were all honored. The Texas-Tyler men and MC women took the track and field sportsmanship honor.

The next SAAC Team Sportsmanship Awards will be named after the fall 2011 season.
