ABILENE, Texas -- The UT Tyler men's track and field team finished in an impressive second
place at the 2011 American Southwest Conference Championship Meet. The
Patriots, with 242 team points, trailed only McMurry - the nation's No. 1
team - which totaled 295 points.
Combined, UT Tyler won a school-best eight events at the league meet.
The Patriots also took home superlative honors as Chris Stonestreet was named the ASC's Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year and Jeff Chandler was recognized as the High Point Male Athlete of the Year.
Warren Brown won his second event of the meet with a first place finish in the men's 5,000-meter run. Brown had a time of 15:40.62 and was followed by Chandler who finished in 16:13.53.
In the field events, Ed Palencia had a throw of 55.86m to win the men's javelin while Josh Chatman took the conference crown in the men's triple jump with a 13.81 mark.
Ross Renfroe won the men's 1,500-meter with a time of 4:05.09. He was followed by teammate John Buck who came in at 4:07.32.
UT Tyler took the top two spots in the men's 800-meter as Nicklas Huff won with a 1:56.36 time and Ford Noack came in second at 1:58.06.
In the men's 4X100 relay, the Patriots' team of Monta Jeffley, Shane Burker, Christian Kearney and Dedrick Weathersby finished in second place with a time of 42.10. McMurry won the event with a 41.28 finish.
On Friday, the Patriots won conference titles in three events, with Brown taking top honors in the men's 10,000-meter run, Chandler winning the men's steeplechase, and Stonestreet bringing home the men's hammer throw trophy.
