Simmons, Richardson to compete at Texas Relays

TYLER – UT Tyler will be represented by Whitney Simmons and Zach Richardson at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by Spectrum this week at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Simmons is scheduled to compete in the Hammer Throw at 11 a.m. on Thursday, while Richardson will run in the first round of the 100-meter dash at 10:45 a.m. on Friday at the University of Texas at Austin campus.

One of the premiere Track & Field events in the nation each year, the Texas Relays will be the largest in its history with more than 7,700 athletes accepted into the meet. There will be just under 200 college teams traveling to Austin for the event that last year ranked as the 13th best multi-day meet in the world according to statistical analysis by All-Athletics.com.

Simmons is the defending NCAA Division III National Champion and comes into this week’s meet having won the first two Outdoor meets of the season in the Hammer along with winning the NCAA DIII Indoor National Weight Throw Championship. Simmons recorded a personal best and the second farthest throw in NCAA DIII history at the Marc Randle Classic three weeks ago with a throw of 62.52 meters and then won last weekend’s Southern Arkansas meet with a distance of 61.35. A senior from White Oak, Simmons finished sixth at last year’s Texas Relays with a throw of 57.48 meters with Oklahoma’s Julia Reedy winning the event with a throw of 62.61. She will be competing against throwers from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Oklahoma, Northern Arizona, Georgia, Houston, Long Beach State, Purdue, Missouri, Central Oklahoma, South Dakota, TCU, South Florida, UTEP, UTSA and Wichita State.

Richardson, a sophomore from Waxahachie, will compete in the 100 meters on Friday morning. His previous best time in the 100 is 11.35 which came last season at the Texas A&M-Commerce meet. He will be going up against sprinters from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Southern California, UT Arlington, Washington, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, A&M-Commerce, Sam Houston, Purdue, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Baylor, Angelo State, Northern Arizona, LSU, Kansas and others at the prestigious event. Richardson is the defending American Southwest Conference Champion in the 400 meters.

Simmons and Richardson will continue their season next weekend at the SFA Skechers Carl Knight Invitational on April 7-8 in Nacogdoches.
