The American Southwest Conference Individual Tennis Championships concluded Saturday at The University of Texas at Tyler with the UT Tyler men’s and women’s both recording successful weekends.
“The tournament is designed so that players in the ASC can get matches in during the fall before the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) regional tournaments and also to allow the coaches in the league a look at the competition,” said UT Tyler head tennis coach Chris Bizot. "The tournament also helps teams in the ASC with their preseason rankings."
The tournament was comprised of nine men’s singles flights, seven women’s singles flights and four flights of doubles for both the men and women.
The UT Tyler men advanced to the finals of each singles flight and senior Kevin Cook, freshman Tim Pedraza and sophomore Will McDonald won their respective flights. The Patriots men also won one of the doubles flights with sophomore Bryan Jolly and McDonald.
“For our men’s team to advance to the finals of each singles flight was really outstanding and probably unprecedented in the history of this tournament,” said Bizot.
On the women’s side, UT Tyler players advanced to the semifinals in six out of the seven flights and senior Kristin Thomas won flight #5.
The UT Tyler women will leave for the ITA regional tournament in Atlanta, Ga. this Thursday and the men’s team will travel to San Antonio for their regional the following week.
