David Wu's final shot of the afternoon was accompanied by a shout of joy and a racket thrown into the net.
The Hardin-Simmons senior had good reason to celebrate as the Cowboys finished off UT Tyler in the American Southwest Conference tennis final Sunday.
Hardin-Simmons, which has dominated the tennis scene in the ASC for the last six years, claimed the men's and women's championships at UT Tyler's Summers Tennis Center.
The men rallied after losing the doubles point to win four of six singles matches against the Patriots for a 4-2 victory and their fifth title in six years.
That came hours after the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls defended their title against the Patriot women, 5-0, for their sixth straight title.
"I was impressed with UT Tyler's play this weekend," Hardin-Simmons coach Shane Williford said. "Their fans were rowdy and they shocked us on the men's side, winning the doubles point, but we hung tough and got it done."
The Cowboys (11-6, 9-0 ASC) won their No. 1 doubles match but UT Tyler's pairings of Steven Campbell-Kevin Cook (8-2) and Jordan Repsher-William McDonald (8-4) both came through for UT Tyler to start the match off with a 1-0 Patriot lead.
Hardin-Simmons rallied, winning three singles matches before Campbell got the Patriots their only singles victory of the day in the matchup of No. 3 players, 6-2, 6-4.
With McDonald leading in the No. 6 singles match, which would have tied the score for UT Tyler, Wu broke Repsher's serve to go up 5-4 and then, after some words of encouragement from Williford, finished it off (6-3, 6-4).
"I told him that this was his team and we needed him to take us on his back again," Williford said. "He has done it all year and he did it again today."
In the women's final, Hardin-Simmons took all three doubles points, rallying from a 7-4 score in the No. 2 doubles match to win 9-7. Then the Cowgirls won the No. 2 and No. 6 matches from the Patriots to take the title.
"(Saturday's) 5-1 score against Mississippi College and (Sunday's) 5-0 final weren't really good indicators of how close these matches were," Williford said. "Both Mississippi College and UT Tyler were very worthy of being here, but our girls just wanted it more."
