CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 23-ranked UT Tyler men’s tennis team had its season end with a 5-1 loss to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The Patriots end their season with a 19-7 record and as the four-time American Southwest Conference champions.

“The guys fought,” UT Tyler head coach Joe Vann said. “Even when we were not playing our best tennis, they always gave themselves a chance by fighting hard. We had so many hard circumstances this year, with a coaching change and injuries to be where we are now and finished strong. We are very young and I am looking forward to seeing what this team can achieve next year.”

Arthur Fagundes and Pablo Gomez gave the Patriots their only win of the match with an 8-4 first doubles win. It was the first time Gomez and Fagundes played as partners this season and came with Joey Fischer unavailable to play. The Patriots trailed 2-1 after doubles after Jose McIntyre and Gabriel Hidalgo took an 8-4 loss in second doubles and Ryan Elwood and Ford Cunningham lost 8-1 in third doubles.

In singles, Fagundes dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision in first singles and is now 14-2 on the season. Fagundes has earned an automatic bid to the NCAA DIII individual championships that will be played from May 25-27 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Vinicio Hadlich dropped a 6-0, 6-0 second singles decision and Daniel Rodriguez fell 6-3, 6-1 in third singles to end the match. Gomez, McIntyre and Hidalgo had their singles matches go unfinished.
