TYLER – UT Tyler tennis star Arthur Fagundes is having himself a week.

The sophomore was named the American Southwest Conference Championship’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Patriots to their fourth straight title on Saturday and was then awarded an individual bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships on Monday. Good news continued on Tuesday with him being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection which reflects his work on the court and also in the classroom where he shines as a civil engineering major at UT Tyler.

A Curitiba, Brazil native, Fagundes and the No. 3 Patriots will take on No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at noon on Saturday in the NCAA DIII Tennis Championship second round. UT Tyler will need to win two matches in Claremont, California this weekend to advance to the national tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but Fagundes is headed there regardless with a 14-1 record in singles play. It will be the second straight season where Fagundes earned the at-large bid to compete in the national tournament.

Fagundes’ success this year started in the fall where he won the ITA Regional in Tyler and advanced to the national tournament. The individual championships will take place on May 25-27 at The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and will be hosted by the University of the South and the Chattanooga Sports Commission. For the CoSIDA award, Fagundes is now nominated for Academic All-America honors.
