TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s tennis team advanced to the American Southwest Conference Championship finals where they will meet UT Dallas at 11 a.m. on Saturday after rallying for a 5-2 semifinal win over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at the Summers Tennis Center.

The Patriots (18-6) were down 2-1 after doubles to the Cru, but stormed back in singles to advance to the finals while UT Dallas advanced with a 5-2 win over Hardin-Simmons to start the second day of the tournament.

“The men started off very slow today and a very good UMHB team jumped on us in doubles,” UT Tyler head coach Joe Vann said. “The men did a great job of re-grouping and coming back together to win it for us in singles. UT Dallas is strong in singles and doubles with a talented squad. We will definitely have to bring some of our best tennis and be focused from the start tomorrow. We do this and we have a great shot at winning.”

UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes improve to 14-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-2 first singles win over Scott Wilding to even the match at 2-2 while Gabriel Hidalgo earned a 6-0, 6-1 sixth singles victory. Joey Fischer earned a 6-2, 6-2 fourth singles win and freshman Daniel Rodriguez rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 third singles win. Rodriguez is now 15-3 on the season, while Hidalgo improved to 8-1 with his victory.

In doubles play, Ryan Elwood and Hidalgo won an 8-6 third doubles decision to give the Patriots their first point of the match. The partners are now 6-0 together this season. Jose McIntyre and Fagundes dropped a 9-7 first doubles decision, while Pablo Gomez and Fischer lost a 9-8 decision before singles play pulled the team through.

UT Tyler has won three straight ASC Championship tournaments and will be playing for their ninth in program history when the Patriots take on the Comets on Saturday. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III postseason which will be played next weekend at a site to be announced.
