RECAP: @patriotstennis edged in nationally-ranked matchup against Whitman

TYLER – The No. 17-ranked UT Tyler men’s tennis team battled but fell 5-4 to No. 13 Whitman College on Sunday to complete a four-match weekend at the Summers Tennis Center.

The Patriots (14-6) were down after doubles play, but tied the match at four before WC (19-6) took the sixth singles match to win the team competition.

Arthur Fagundes continued his stellar sophomore season by earning a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 first singles win to improve to 12-1 on the year, while Daniel Rodriguez took a 6-2, 6-1 third singles win. A freshman, Rodriguez is now 14-3 on the season after rolling to the win on Sunday. Joey Fischer would give the Patriots their third singles victory on the day after earning a 7-6, 6-2 fifth singles win. Fischer, who was honored on Saturday with Ryan Elwood an Jake Cunningham on Senior Day, improved to 8-4 in singles play with his win.

The Patriots trailed 2-1 after doubles play with Gabriel Hidalgo and Elwood earning an 8-5 third doubles win. Fagundes and Jose McIntyre lost 8-5 in first doubles to the No. 24-ranked team of Jake Hoeger and Robert Carter. UT Tyler’s No. 25-ranked partnership of Fischer and Gomez also lost an 8-5 decision.

UT Tyler will finish off the regular season on Friday with a pair of American Southwest Conference matches against LeTourneau and Louisiana College in Longview. The Patriots will play the YellowJackets on their home court at 9 a.m. before taking on the Wildcats in the regular-season finale. With two wins, the Patriots would win the ASC East Division and would host the ASC Men’s Championship from May 4-6 at the Summers Tennis Center.
