RECAP: Fagundes, Rodriguez, McIntyre earn wins over No. 4 Middlebury

GEORGETOWN – UT Tyler sophomore and No. 9-ranked Arthur Fagundes improved to 10-0 on the season with a 4-6, 6-5, 10-1 first singles win over No. 17 Will de Quant on Sunday while freshman Daniel Rodriguez extended his winning streak to nine for the Patriots who battled No. 4 Middlebury in the third and final match this weekend at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.  

The No. 20-ranked Patriots took a 6-3 non-conference loss to the Panthers who improved to 7-0 on the season after also knocking off UT Dallas and No. 39 Southwestern this weekend. UT Tyler had a three-match winning streak end with the loss after it had earned a 9-0 win over Linfield and a 5-4 victory over Southwestern on Saturday in Georgetown.

Fagundes stayed perfect on the season and is now 26-6 in his career. The 2016 American Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Year advanced to nationals during the fall season and has resumed his high level of play this spring with 10 straight first singles victories.

Rodriguez would improve to 12-2 on the season after earned a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 third singles win. A Mexico native, Rodriguez was named the ASC Player of the Week last week after going 3-0 in Orlando before taking three more wins this weekend in Georgetown. McIntyre earned the third win of the day for the Patriots by taking a 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-8 sixth singles victory over Weston Brach. McIntyre improved his season’s record to 10-2 this season and is 8-2 in his last 10.

UT Tyler returns to action this weekend when it travels to Waco to play Gustavus Adolphus in a non-conference neutral court match before heading to Arkansas to play Ozarks in American Southwest Conference play. The defending ASC champions are 3-0 in conference play this season.
