RICHARDSON – UT Tyler and UT Dallas have been picked to win the 2017 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis East and West Division titles after a vote of the league's head coaches announced by the conference office Monday.

UT Tyler received 65 points and 13 first-place votes to secure the top spot in the East Division. UT Dallascollected 83 points and 10 first-place votes to lead the West Division.

East Texas Baptist was picked second in the East Division with 48 points. LeTourneau came in third (40), Univ. of Ozarks fourth (27) and Louisiana College fifth (15). 

In the West Division, Hardin-Simmons received 76 points and two first-place votes to rank second. Mary Hardin-Baylor came in third with 63 points and Concordia Texas had 52 points and one first-place vote to rank fourth. McMurry was picked fifth, (49), Sul Ross State came in sixth (33) and Howard Payne seventh (20). 

In addition to the preseason poll, 26 players were named to the ASC Men’s Tennis Preseason Watch List by the head coaches. Among the players returning for the new season are three all-conference selections, including Hardin-Simmons sophomore Alex Hunt and UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes

Hunt received dual honors as the West Division Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year. Hunt went 4-1 at No. 1 singles against ASC opponents and went undefeated in No. 1 doubles at 5-0. Overall, Hunt recorded double-digit win totals with a 14-6 mark in singles and a 13-8 record in doubles. Hunt led Hardin-Simmons to a 4-1 record in the West Division and an appearance in the ASC Championship semifinals.

Fagundes was named the East Division Newcomer of the Year. He returns from a record-setting season as the first freshman in UT Tyler history to advance to the national tournament in both singles and doubles. Fagundes finished with a 16-7 singles record, was named the ITA West Region Rookie of the Year and received the American Southwest Conference Championship MVP after leading the Patriots to the 2016 title.

The men’s tennis season will begin Saturday, January 28 as East Texas Baptist travels to Abilene for a double-header match against ASC rivals Hardin-Simmons and McMurry.
