TYLER – UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes will open play at the 2016 ITA Oracle Cup on Wednesday in a Northwest/Southwest play-in match at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club in Surprise, Arizona.

Fagundes rolled through the ITA Southwest Championship last week by not dropping a single set in six wins to become the first Patriot to earn a regional singles title. His regional championship earned himself a berth to the ITA national tournament where he will play Spencer Watanabe of George Fox University at noon (CST) on Wednesday.

“I feel like Arthur has been very focused on the process and his own game,” UT Tyler coach Chris Bizot said. “He is has done a great job of structuring his points and managing his time on court. The field is very strong as is the case year in and year out. If he plays to his ability he will have as good a chance as anyone in the tournament.”

A sophomore from Curitiba, Brazil, Fagundes completed the regional event without dropping a single set, including a 6-2, 6-4 championship win over Chaz Mayer (Trinity) after a 6-3, 6-1 semifinal win over Southwestern’s Alexis Dimanche to reach the finals. The three days of domination came after he was named the ITA West Region Rookie of the Year and the American Southwest Conference Rookie of the Year.

“I played my best tennis because I was so focused and I worked hard for five weeks to get here,” said Fagundes after winning the regional title. “My mind was strong and I was trying hard every point.”

The national tournament in Arizona will feature players from NCAA Division II, NCAA DIII, NAIA and junior college. The ITA will provide a live stream at FloTennis.com.
