Fagundes cruises as top-seeded player at ITA Regionals

TYLER – UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes made quick work of his first two matches as the ITA Regional Championships’ top seed on Saturday while Joey Fischer also advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins on the first day of the tournament.

Fagundes showed his strength with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Connor Mason (ETBU) in his first match before earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over Julian Dunmore (UMHB). He will take on Liam Crawly from Trinity on Sunday in the quarterfinals at the Summers Tennis Center. Fischer was gritty on Saturday and advances with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jonathan Christie (Schreiner) and then a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Ryan Morton from UTD. Fischer will take on seventh-seeded Scott Wilding (UMHB) on Sunday.

Jose McIntyre opened his tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Carlos Subealdea (TLU) but would fall 6-1, 6-1 to Trinity’s Jordan Pitts who is seeded sixth in the regional event. Gabriel Hidalgo mirrored McIntyre by earning a first-round win with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Siddharth Kortikere (Austin College) before falling 6-4, 7-6 (2) against Trinity’s Matt Tyer. Vitor Laporte and Pablo Gomez each lost their first-round matches.

In “B” Singles play, UT Tyler’s Marvin Griener and Ford Cunningham earned wins.

UT Tyler was represented this weekend in Championship Doubles by partnerships of Hidalgo/McIntyre, Fischer/Gomez, Fagundes/Hadlich, Cunningham/Elwood and VanWinkle/Rodiguez. Fagundez and Hadlich are the third-seeded team in the field.

Fagundes and Hadlich earned an 8-2 win in their first doubles match over at team from Southwestern, while Hidalgo and McIntyre are moving on in the Championship Draw with an 8-5 victory over Schreiner and Fischer and Gomez secured a 9-7 win. Fischer/Gomez are the fifth seed in the doubles tournament and earned their win over Norman/Khansari of Southwestern.

The Championship Draw will play their matches starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday at the Summers Tennis Center after playing their match at TJC on Saturday.
