    UT Tyler’s Arthur Fagundes has earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division III All-America honors in singles play after going 14-3 this season and advancing to the NCAA DIII Championship.

    Fagundes to play John Hopkins opponent on Thursday

    UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes will play John Hopkins University’s Jeremy Dubin at 10 a.m. (CST) on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Individual Championship at The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A Curitiba, Brazil native, Fagundes is ranked No. 9 nationally and is 14-2 on the season coming into his second NCAA DIII Championship. He also advanced to the ITA National Finals in the fall after earning a berth to the Championship last season as a freshman.

    Fagundes earns berth to NCAA tournament, academic award

    Arthur Fagundes was named the American Southwest Conference Championship’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Patriots to their fourth straight title on Saturday and was then awarded an individual bid to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships on Monday. Good news continued on Tuesday with him being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection which reflects his work on the court and also in the classroom where he shines as a civil engineering major at UT Tyler.

    TOURNAMENT CENTRAL: ASC Tennis Championship

    Men's ASC tournament play is scheduled May 4-6 and will be hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler, the No. 1 seed in the East Division. Quarterfinals are May 4, semifinals May 5 and the final May 6. All matches will be held at the Summers Tennis Center on the UT Tyler campus. Both UT Tyler teams open the conference postseason as three-time defending conference champions (2014, '15, '16) and have taken the ASC crown in eight of the last nine tournaments. The men's and women's ASC champions will each earn the ASC automatic berth into their respective NCAA Division III Tennis Championships.

    Freshman Daniel Rodriguez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico / Instituto Real de San Luis) extended a 10-match winning streak with a 6-2, 6-3 third singles victory over Patrick Whaling of No. 31 ranked Gustavus Adolphus. He later took an 8-3 third doubles win with Jake Cunningham on Saturday at Univ. of Ozarks. Rodriguez is now 13-2 on the season in singles play.

    AWARD: Fagundes named ASC Player of the Week

    Arthur Fagundes improved to 10-0 in first singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nickoloz Snovely from No. 39 Southwestern (Texas) and then took down William de Quant from No. 4 Middlebury on a 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 decision on Sunday. Fagundes has now won 26 singles matches in his two seasons at UT Tyler after knocking off ranked opponents last weekend in Georgetown.

    UT Tyler sophomore Arthur Fagundes earned the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Championship singles title in program history after an impressive 6-2, 6-4 finals win over Chaz Mayer on Monday at the Summers Tennis Center. In the doubles final, Joey Fischer and Pablo Gomez would finish as tournament runner-ups following a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 battle against Trinity’s Wilson Lambeth and Matt Tyer.
