@patriotstennis opens ASC play with two wins

TYLER – The UT Tyler tennis programs had a perfect start to American Southwest Conference play with the men’s and women’s teams earning 9-0 victories over Louisiana College and LeTourneau on Friday at the Summers Tennis Center.

The Patriot women opened conference play in the morning by rolling to a 9-0 win over Louisiana College to remain unbeaten at 9-0 on the season. Mary Alice Blacketer picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in first singles and also earned an 8-0 first doubles win with teammate Tori Musngi. Savannah Seely earned another 6-0, 6-0 victory in second singles while Victoria Kniffen claimed 6-0, 6-0 win in third doubles. Seely and Kniffen were 8-1 winners in second doubles action against the Wildcats, while Shelby Hart and Caitlin Mitchell earned an 8-0 third doubles win. Katie Brown would add a 6-1, 6-0 victory in fifth singles and Mitchell claimed a 6-0, 6-0 fifth singles win to cap the first set of matches of the day.  

The women improved to 10-0 on the season with another 9-0 win with Blacketer owning a 6-0, 6-0 first singles win and then an 8-1 first doubles with with Musngi. Tori would earn a 6-0, 6-0 second singles win of her own, while McKissick, Nicole Musngi, Janae Warren and Nancy Perez each cruised to wins over LETU opponents.

The men recorded their 9-0 victory and dropped only one set all day against the Wildcats in a quick match to open ASC play. Frankie Fischer claimed a 6-0, 6-1 first singles win and teamed up with Keaton McCormick for an 8-0 first doubles victory. Jack Puckey, McCormick, Jake Cunningham, Jacob Van Der Schans and Alex Bouchard each earned 6-0, 6-0 singles wins. In second doubles, it was Van Der Schans and Alex Free taking an 8-0 win in second doubles and Bouchard and Cunningham with an 8-0 win in third doubles.  

The No. 27 Patriots would ease to 2-0 in ASC play with another decisive win to finish off the day with Joey Fischer earning a 6-1, 6-1 first singles win, while Pablo Gomez took a 6-4, 6-1 decision in second singles and Jose McIntyre a 6-4, 6-3 third singles win. McIntyre, who was named the ASC East Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, also earned an 8-0 win with teammate Daniel Budd in second doubles.

UT Tyler will return to action after today with a 10 a.m. match on Monday against Rhodes College at the Summers Tennis Center.
