@patriotstennis earns wins over Roos, Pirates

TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 9-0 win over Austin College and then an 8-1 victory over Southwestern University on Saturday in a matches played at the Summers Tennis Center.The Patriots sweep of the two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents takes their home record to 5-0 with their only loss coming to NCAA Division II member St. Edward’s.

UT Tyler had an impress start to the day as it rolled to a 9-0 win over Austin College after a delay due to court conditions after a morning of mist. The Patriots would start with three doubles victories, including Fischer and Fagundes continuing their first doubles dominance and Daniel Budd and Jose McIntyre claiming a second doubles win and Pablo Gomez and Joey Fischer teaming up to take an 8-2 third doubles victory. Fischer and Fagundes earned their win with an 8-2 result over Cedric Ambulo and Josh Granberry.

Fagundes, who is ranked 43rd as a freshman, earned a 6-0, 6-0 first singles victory over Ambulo to go along with the doubles win, while Joey Fischer claimed a 6-1, 6-4 second doubles victory. The Patriots would also get singles wins from Gomez, Cameron McCarthy, Ryan Elwood and Alex Free during the morning match with the Roos.  

Southwestern, which played at LeTourneau in the morning before traveling to Tyler, would have no answers for the Patriots either in a match that went well into the night after the delays during the day. Budd, who is ranked No. 21 in singles, would improve to 4-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 first singles win over Nickoloz Snovely while Fagundes earned a 6-1, 6-2 second singles win. Fagundes is ranked No. 43 and is now 5-0 in singles and and 4-1 in first doubles with Frankie Fischer after an 8-6 win over Snovely and Grant Gideon.

Joey Fischer, McIntyre and Frankie Fischer also earned singles wins over SU players, while Budd and McIntyre claimed an 8-2 second doubles and Gomez and Joey Fischer teamed up for a third doubles win.

UT Tyler will return to action next Friday with a pair of matches against Millsaps and Belhaven in Jackson, Mississippi before opening American Southwest Conference play on March 4 against Louisiana College and LeTourneau on the Summer Tennis Center courts.
