UT Tyler tennis splits Sunday afternoon matches

TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s tennis team went on the road this weekend to face St. Edwards University where they would fall 5-4 in the official scoring system in College Station but also where they played 13 matches winning seven and taking three of the four doubles matches. The Patriot women would earn a 7-2 home win over LSU-Alexandria on Sunday to improve to 3-0. 

For the doubles one’s match Frankie Fischer teamed up with Arthur Fagundes to face off against the St. Edwards men’s one’s team, but couldn’t snag the win, dropping the match 8-1. Senior Daniel Budd teamed up with freshman Jose McIntyre on the doubles two’s court and ended up winning the match with a score of 8-5, along with that win, Ryan Elwood and Jack Puckey won the three’s court with an 8-5 score and Joey Fischer and Pablo Gomez finished it off winning the four’s court 8-4.

Going into singles play the Patriots had a 3-1 lead, Budd was able to come out on top in the one’s match defeating R. Pineda 7-5, 6-2. Fagundes also got the sweep for the two’s court winning 6-2, 6-1 before St. Edwards got on a roll picking up a couple sweeps for the three, four, five, six and seven court. The Patriots were able to get the win by taking the final two matches with Frankie Fischer winning the match in three, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 and Cameron McCarthy finishing it off with 7-6, 6-2 win in the eight spot.

The Patriots (2-1) dropped the match 5-4 against St. Edward’s and will face off at home against Texas A&M –Texarkana Feb 12. at 2:30 p.m. at the Summers Tennis Center.

The #36 ranked UT Tyler Patriots women’s team faced off at home against Louisiana State University – Alexandria and finished the series winning it 7-2. The pair of Mary Alice Blacketer and Tori Musngi took the number one spot with Alexandra McKissick and Nicole Musngi playing for the two’s and Lauren Kuhn teamed up with partner Kaitlyn Huskey on the three’s court. All three were able to get the sweep in double’s play winning all three matches 8-6.

Moving into singles play with a 3-0 lead, the Patriots didn’t let up, winning four of the next six matches. On the one’s court, Blacketer had a battle, but finished in a three set win, 6-2, 0-6, 10-5. Tori Musngi won a set on the two’s court, but LSUA won the match 6-1, 4-6, 11-9. Kuhn, McKissick and Nicole Musngi grabbed the wins for the three, four and five court with LSUA able to grab another match win finishing the day on the six court with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Patriot player Janae Warren.

The women will also be moving on to face Texas A&M–Texarkana at home next Friday at 2:30 p.m.
