@patriotstennis men sweep matches over Abilene opponents

TYLER – Eighteen matches played, 18 matches won by UT Tyler.

The No. 27-ranked Patriot men’s tennis team opened the season with a pair of 9-0 victories over Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on Sunday at the Summers Tennis Center, including a pair of first doubles wins by the No. 25-ranked team of Frankie Fischer and Arthur Fagundes.

Fischer and Fagundes, senior and freshman respectively, started the 2016 campaign with an 8-3 victory over Andrew Eurek and Alex Hunt from Hardin-Simmons and then dispatched McMurry’s Carlos Perez and Hunter Ward 8-5 to close out the day. Fischer, in his fourth season out of Georgetown, is now 26-3 in his doubles career at UT Tyler while Fagundes is just getting started for the Patriots and is from Curitiba, Brazil. Fagundes would also earn a pair of singles victories, starting with a second singles 6-1, 6-3 win over Hunt in the morning and then securing a first singles victory over Perez (McM) in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

“I felt good about the performance today against two regionally ranked teams,” UT Tyler head coach Chris Bizot said. “We went nine deep in the lineup and were able to get some of our new players some real match experience.”

Daniel Budd would also secure four wins during the day with a 6-1, 6-0 first singles victory over HSU’s Griffin Weinkam and then a 6-3, 6-0 second singles win to close out the day against the War Hawks. Budd is now 43-21 in singles play after Sunday’s matches, while he and Joey McIntyre also rolled to second doubles victories. McIntyre and Budd opened the season with an 8-2 win over HSU and then commanded an 8-1 victory over McMurry. UT Tyler would also get a pair of doubles victories with Jack Puckey and Ryan Elwood taking an 8-1 win over a third doubles team from HSU and then Pablo Gomez and Joey Fischer earning an 8-5 third doubles win over Roberson and Mann from McMurry. Joey Fischer also took a third singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ben Gutierrez (HSU) and Puckey won in third singles with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Hunter Ward of McMurry.

The Patriots return to action against St. Edward’s at 10:30 a.m. next Sunday in a neutral court match to be played in College Station. Their next home match is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12 against Texas A&M-Texarkana at the Summers Tennis Center.
