Budd, Fagundes advance to 'A' Singles semifinals

SAN ANTONIO – UT Tyler’s Daniel Budd and Arthur Fagundes have advanced to the semifinals where they will play at 8 a.m. on Sunday for the right to play each other in the finals of the “A” Singles at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Region Championships, while doubles teams of Ryan Elwood and Jack Puckey along with Fagundes and Frankie Fischer could meet each other in the finals if both win their semifinal matches to start the day. 

Budd advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chas Mayer (Trinity) and will now play Trinity’s Adam Krull on Sunday in the semifinals at the Butch Newman Tennis Center. Fagundes’s path to the semifinal s included a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammate Ryan Elwood that advanced him to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Fagundes earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Wilson Lambeth (TU). Fagundes will now play Paxton Deuel (TU) at 8 a.m. with the winner to play in the championship at noon.

The “A” Singles and Doubles winners from this weekend’s tournament will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 15-18 at Sumter, South Carolina.

UT Tyler doubles teams of Ryan Elwood and Jack Puckey had advanced to the “A” doubles quarterfinals after earning an 8-5 win over Hunt/Eurek (HSU) and then knocked off a Schreiner team of Newman/Hancock and then Guini/Mayer (TU) to advance to Sunday. On the other side of the bracket, Fagundes and Fischer advanced to Sunday with an 8-2 win over their teammates, Alex Free and Keaton McMormick in the quarterfinals. Fagundes/Fischer earned an 8-6 win over Brown/Crawley (TU) and Free/McCormick beat Weir/Roberson (McM) to set up their all-Patriot quarterfinal matchup.

Budd and Joey Fischer had advanced with an 8-4 victory over a team from UMHB but fell 8-5 to Lambeth/Bilsbarrow (TU) and Pablo Gomez and Jose McIntyre were eliminated after a 9-7 los to Lambert/Bilsbarrow (TU) after advancing with an 8-1 win over a Hardin-Simmons team. Times for semifinal and finals on Sunday are not posted.
