#uttylermtennis singles players advance at ITA Regionals

SAN ANTONIO – Weather has caused delays throughout Friday at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Southwest Region Championships but not before UT Tyler’s Daniel Budd, Arthur Fagundes, Ryan Elwood, Joe Fischer and Alex Free advanced in singles play at the Butch Newman Tennis Center on Trinity University’s campus.

In delay throughout since about 7:30 p.m., officials were targeting a 9:30 p.m. resumption of play with one round of A Doubles.

Budd advanced to Saturday with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Andrew Eurek of Hardin-Simmons in the first round and then rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hoanh Le (Schreiner). Budd will face Trinity’s Matt Tyer on his home court at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Alex Free advanced in the A Singles Consolation with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win over Cedric Ambulo (Austin College) and will play Josh Newman (Schreiner) at 8 a.m. with the winner to play again at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

The Patriots are also being represented by several doubles teams that advanced out of a Thursday qualifier. UT Tyler doubles teams include Fagundes and Frankie Fischer, Budd and Joey Fischer.

The “A” Singles and Doubles winners from this weekend’s tournament will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships October 15-18 at Sumter, South Carolina.
