TYLER -- The UT Tyler men's and women's tennis teams will both compete for the American Southwest Conference championship on Sunday afternoon at the UT Tyler Summer's Tennis Center.
The women advanced to the title match by taking care of Mary Hardin- Baylor in the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon. The men overtook UT Dallas in the semi-finals to advance to the championship.
Both teams will be looking for their fifth ASC title as the men will take on Mississippi College and the women will match up against UT Dallas.
In the semi-finals, the women took down UMHB by a score of 5-1, while the men blanked UT Dallas with a score of 5-0.
In the women's matches, Amy Friesenhahn took down the Cru's Megan Aarhus by scores of 6-2 and 4-2. Jessica Blundell put together an impressive match by defeating Chaley Shiffler, 6-1 in both sets.
UT Tyler's Brittany Trich also put sixes on the board with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory over the Cru's Angelie Juaneza. Morgan Wilkins followed suit with a victory over Penelope Kittel by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
In the women's doubles matches, the duo of Blundell and Jennifer Payne defeated the Cru's Ashlee Bilbo and Kittel by a score of 8-2. By the same score of 8-2, Wilkins and Ashley Albro took down Shiffler and Juaneza for UMHB.
In the men's match against UT Dallas, Robert Hodous and Kevin Wright defeated the Comet's Bryan Leib and Ian Lucio by a score of 8-2.
In the No. 1 doubles match, the solid duo of Ryan Spencer and Kevin Singer took down UT Dallas' Matthew Davis and Dustin Foster, 8-5.
In singles play, the Patriots handed the Comet's all first set losses by a score of 6-0. Doug Kierstad won 6-0 and 6-2 against David Yeh, while Wright won 6-0 and 6-4 over Foster.
The men will start the day off with the championship match against Mississippi College at 1 p.m. and the women will follow once the men's matches are complete. Both title matches will be played at the UT Tyler Summers Tennis Center.
