MARSHALL, Texas/PINEVILLE, La. -- The UT Tyler men's and women's tennis teams both closed out the regular season with clean sweeps of East Texas Baptist and Louisiana College to finish with perfect, 6-0 records in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
By virtue of winning the East Division titles, the Patriots will receive first-round byes in the ASC Championship Tournament set for next weekend at the Summers Tennis Center and Tyler Tennis and Swim in Tyler. The men will play their semifinal match against at 9:30 a.m. Saturday while the women will play the late match at 1:30 p.m.
Against ETBU, the Patriots' men were a perfect 6-0, 6-0 in all of the singles matches played, with wins by Ryan Spencer, Edward Timponi, Doug Kierstead, Ryan Hodous and Drew Reid. Spencer and Kevin Wright won their doubles match, 8-4, and Kierstead and Joey Hendrie were 8-0 winners.
The women were equally dominant against ETBU, including a 6-2, 6-0 win by Jessica Blundell at No. 1 singles, and a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Jennifer Payne at No. 2 singles. Brittany Trich, Morgan Wilkins, Ashley Albro and Emily Evans also won at singles, all 6-0, 6-0. In doubles play, Sydni Hermsdorf/Amy Friesenhahn, Blundell/Payne and Albro/Wilkins were winners.
Almost identical results came in the late match against Louisiana College.
With the wins, the UT Tyler men improve to 15-5 (6-0) on the season, while the women are 16-4 (6-0).
