Men's Tennis Looks To Continue Winning Ways

There are certain things you expect to see during springtime in Tyler, Texas.  Beautiful azaleas lining the brick streets, rain showers that hit without warning, and the UT Tyler men's tennis team hoisting the American Southwest Conference championship trophy. 

The Patriots have won the ASC east division every year since the program was started in 2004, also winning four ASC tournament championships in a row.  UT Tyler has never lost a match in ASC play, going 41-0 in conference matches.

Chris Bizot, four-time ASC coach of the year on the men's side has promising returners on this years squad, looking to win their ninth ASC east division title and fifth ASC tournament title in a row.

Here is a look at the 2012 Spring roster:

Senior:

Kevin Wright (College Station, TX)-  Currently the owner of the fifth most wins in school history (44), Wright will look to end his career as one of the most successful tennis players in the program's history.  A standout in both singles and doubles competition, Wright looks to continue his success in his senior season.  In 2011, Wright 14-5 (4-0) in singles matches and 15-8 (4-0) in doubles matches.  His most successful season was his sophomore year, going 20-7 (tied for third most wins in a season) in singles matches.  Wright is a three-time All-Conference performer, and 2011's ASC Sportmanship Athlete of the Year.

Juniors:

Kevin Singer (Dallas, TX)-  In his first year at UT Tyler, Singer was named All-Conference after going 15-7 (5-0) in singles matches and 17-6 (4-0) in doubles competition.  

Matt Vechione (El Paso, TX)- Vechione is 5-1 (1-0) in his career at UT Tyler in singles matches.  In 2010, he went 4-1 overall in singles matches gaining valuable experience.

Ethan LaPlante (Barrie, Ontario)- After going 1-0 (1-0) in singles competition a year ago, LaPlante looks to continue his success in 2012.  

Sophomores:

Edward Timponi (Rio de Janiero, Brazil)- Timponi, a freshman All-Conference performer a year ago is back for his sophomore season after going 8-5 (3-0) in singles competition and 2-0 in doubles.  

Thomas Kierstead (Centennial, CO)- Went 1-0 as a true freshman for the Patriots.

Newcomers:

Ryan Spencer (So, Katy, TX); Matt Moreman (So, Houston, TX); Ryan Brunson (Fr, Austin, TX); Joe Hendrie (Fr, New Braunfels, TX); Robert Hodous (Fr, Fayetteville, AR); Vincent Nguyen (Fr, The Colony, TX); Drew Reid (Fr, Lewisville, TX)

The UT Tyler men's tennis team begins it's Spring schedule on February 18 at 3 p.m. against McMurry at the Summers Tennis Center in Tyler.
