PREVIEW: No. 23 @patriotstennis, No. 3 Stags set for Friday showdown

TYLER – The No. 23 ranked UT Tyler Patriots will play No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at noon (CST) on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.

The Patriots (19-6) are coming off winning their fourth straight American Southwest Conference Championship and enter the tournament on a five-match winning streak. The Stags, who won the 2015 NCAA DIII National Championship, are 28-3 on the season and are 21-0 on their home court entering the tournament. The other pairing features No. 13 Trinity and No. 14 Whitman College with the winners of the two matches to play at noon on Saturday. The Patriots did not play CMS this season, did face the other two. UT Tyler dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision against Whitman on April 9 and a 7-2 match against the Tigers two days earlier.

UT Tyler is led by Arthur Fagundes who is 14-1 on the season in first singles play. Named the ASC Championship MVP and ASC East Division Player of the Year, Fagundes ranked No. 9 in the nation and earned a bid as an individual to the NCAA DIII National Championship at the end of May in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Along with singles, he partners with Jose McIntyre in first doubles.

In second singles, Vinicio Hadlich has won 11 matches this season while freshman Daniel Rodriguez is 15-3 and McIntyre is 11-4 in singles. Rodriguez was named the ASC East Division Freshman of the Year on Thursday. Pablo Gomez brings a 9-6 singles record to the NCAA postseason and senior Joey Fischer is 10-4 in fifth singles play. Fischer and Gomez lead the Patriots in doubles with a 16-5 record in second doubles, while Ryan Elwood and Gabriel Hidalgo are 7-0 as partners at third doubles.
