UT Tyler takes 9-0 win at TLU to split Sunday matches

SAN ANTONIO/SEGUIN – The No. 29-ranked UT Tyler men’s tennis team split a pair of non-conference matches on Sunday after earning a 9-0 win over Texas Lutheran in Seguin after taking an 8-1 defeat to No. 13 Washington-St. Louis in a match played at Trinity University in San Antonio.

The Patriots are now 12-7 on the season and will now host Ozarks on Saturday at 9 a.m. in their final match at the Summers Tennis Center. UT Tyler is 9-1 on its home court this season coming into the match against the Eagles.

On Sunday, one of the highlights was senior Daniel Budd securing the 50th doubles victory of his career after he and Ryan Elwood partnered up to take an 8-2 second doubles win over the Bulldogs. Budd is now 50-20 in doubles play during his UT Tyler career and is at 49 career singles wins after cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 first singles win over Ryan Beene in Seguin. He is currently 9-5 in singles play this season and 12-4 in doubles action. Sunday’s win with Elwood was the second time the two have played as a doubles team this season. Elwood won the only UT Tyler match of the day against Washington with a hard-fought 7-6 (12-10), 6-7 (10-12), 10-3 sixth singles win in the morning match in San Antonio.

Arthur Fagundes continued his strong freshman season with a 7-5, 6-2 second singles win over TLU, while Joey Fischer, Jose McIntyre, Cameron McCarthy and Jack Puckey each claimed victories over the Bulldogs. Frankie Fischer and McIntyre cruised to an 8-0 first doubles win and Joey Fischer and Pablo Gomez gave the Patriots a doubles sweep with an 8-2 third doubles victory.

Washington-St. Louis improved to 10-2 on the season with the win over the Patriots, while TLU is now 8-8.
