BELTON – The UT Tyler Patriots finished as the American Southwest Conference Men’s Soccer Championship runner-up after Mary Hardin-Baylor got a 81st minute goal from Case Carnes to claim a 1-0 finals win on Sunday at the Cru Soccer Field.

The Patriots (11-3-3) who were ranked No. 4 in the West region entering the postseason will now have to wait until the NCAA Division III Selection Show which is scheduled to be aired at 12:30 p.m. on Monday to see if they are awarded an at-large bid. The Cru (15-2-1) eared the ASC’s automatic bid to the nation tournament after winning their first conference title in program history. UT Tyler, which is a three-time champion of the tournament, has now finished as the tournament’s runner-up three times.

The Patriots were limited to two shots on goal in the game with Lucas Pereira and Jose Poo putting attempts on UMHB goalkeeper Bryce Eichhorn who made the saves. UT Tyler senior goalkeeper John McGuffin finished the game with five saves, including four in the first half.

UT Tyler’s Ryan Brinda, Travis Collins and Erik Macias were named to the ASC Championship all-tournament team for their work throughout, including the 1-0 semifinal win over UT Dallas on Saturday to reach the finals. Carnes, who is a Tyler native, was named the tournament’s MVP after scoring the lone goal in the championship game.
