TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s soccer team will begin a five-game home stand this week by hosting Hardin-Simmons on Thursday and McMurry on Saturday in a pair of American Southwest Conference games at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

The Patriots (4-2-2, 3-1-0 ASC) are looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss last Saturday at Mary Hardin-Baylor that ended their three-game winning streak and bumped them from being ranked No. 17 in the nation to out of the United Soccer Coaches poll. UT Tyler, which earned a 3-1 road win over Concordia last Thursday and is ranked sixth in the West Region, is 2-0 at home this season and has outscored its opponents by a 13-6 margin through its eight games. Hardin-Simmons (2-1-1, 1-0-1 ASC) has only played half the games the Patriots have and is coming off a 1-0 win over ETBU last Saturday and a scoreless draw against LeTourneau. McMurry is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play going into a Thursday night game at Ozarks before traveling to Tyler for Saturday’s game.

Leandro Cid-Fernandez leads the Patriots this season with four goals, including becoming the program’s all-time leader with his 34th career goal last Thursday at Concordia. An Argentina native, Cid-Fernandez scored two goals against UT Dallas earlier this season and also scored against Howard Payne. He added an assist in the win over the Tornados last week and is the program’s all-time points leader at 80 entering Thursday’s game against HSU.

Lucas Pereira continues to make things happen offensively for the Patriots and has three goals and three assists. A two-time all-region selection along with Cid-Fernandez, Pereira scored a goal in the win over Concordia and also had two assists against UTD. Akon N’Guetta has two goals, both coming in the win over Howard Payne, while Caio Godinho, Jose Pool, Alfonso Ochoa and Chris Stamm have one goal each. The Patriot offense has 40 shots on goal through eight games.

John McGuffin has recorded three shutouts and has 25 saves in goal for the Patriots, including making a season-high six saves on Saturday in the loss at UMHB. A senior goalkeeper who has earned on ASC Defensive Player of the Week, McGuffin had four saves against Concordia last week and also has five-save games against Redlands and UT Dallas.

After this week, the Patriots will take a two-week break from competition before hosting East Texas Baptist on Thursday, Oct. 12 and LeTourneau on Saturday, Oct. 14. The home stand will end with Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 21 against Ozarks before finishing off the regular season at Belhaven and Louisiana College the last week of October on the road.
