TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s soccer team has propelled its self into the national consciousness at No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Poll after starting American Southwest Conference with a pair of shutout wins along with opening the season with a 1-0 victory over then-No. 7 ranked Redlands.

The Patriots (3-1-2, 2-0 ASC) began ASC play last week with a 2-0 win over UT Dallas which is now ranked No. 25 and then a 5-0 win over previously unbeaten Howard Payne. UT Tyler, which was unranked in the preseason poll, has outscored its opponents by a 10-3 margin through six games and has already had four shutouts.

Leandro Cid-Fernandez leads the Patriots with three goals this season, including matching the all-time UT Tyler record with one against HPU. He currently has 33 career goals, just one away from passing Barrett Browning for the all-time record. Akon N’Guetta is coming off a two-goal performance against HPU for the Patriots for his first two goals of the season, while Lucas Pereira leads the team with three assists and also has two goals. UT Tyler goalkeeper John McGuffin has anchored a stout defensive effort with 15 saves, while the team’s offense has a 33-17 shot advantage this season.

The University of Chicago is the top ranked NCAA DIII team in this week’s poll, followed by No. 2 Calvin, No. 3 Tufts, No. 4 Lycoming College and then John Carroll to round out the top-5. Trinity University is No. 6 after dropping two spots despite a 5-0 record this season.

UT Tyler will return to action this week with a pair of road games, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday against Concordia at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex. The Tornados are 5-0 on the season after opening ASC play with shutout wins over East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau last weekend.
