TYLER – UT Tyler’s Leandro Cid-Fernandez scored two goals off assists from Lucas Pereira and John McGuffin recorded five saves to lead the Patriots to a 2-0 win over UT Dallas on Thursday in their American Southwest Conference opener at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

The Patriots (2-1-2, 1-0 ASC) earned their second shutout of the season in their home opener after starting the season with four road games. UT Tyler will return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday against Howard Payne in Tyler.

Cid-Fernandez is now one goal away from matching the all-time UTT career record after scoring the 31st and 32nd goal of his career. He is one goal away from matching Barrett Browning for the program’s record after a 29th minute goal that gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead and then another in the opening minute of the second half. An Argentina native, he has scored 32 goals in 56 career games at UT Tyler where he is a two-time all-region selection and is a two-time ASC Midfielder of the Year.

UTD (2-3) was picked to win the ASC East Division after winning the conference tournament the past two years, but was limited to only five shots on goal and eight total shots against a stout UT Tyler defense. McGuffin saved five shots for the 15th shutout of his career.

Cid-Fernandez led the Patriots with four shots on goal, while Pereira and Mark Guevara had one each. Pereira, who now has three assists this season and eight in his career, had a multi-assist performance for his first time with the Patriots. Jordan Welch, Erik Macias, Steven Soriano and Rolando Hernandez each had one shot each for the Patriots in the win.

The Patriots will take on HPU on Saturday before travelling to play at Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor next weekend.
