TYLER – The UT Tyler men’s soccer team is traveling to Tacoma, Washington this weekend where the Patriots will play Pacific Lutheran on Friday and Puget Sound on Saturday in a pair of non-conference games.

The Patriots (1-0-1) are travelling to the west coast for the first time since they played in the NCAA Division III Championships in 2011 in Redlands, California and after opening the 2017 season with a 1-0 win over No. 7 Redlands last Friday and a 1-1 draw against Our Lady of the Lake last Sunday. Lucas Pereira led the Patriots in their season-openers with the game-winning goal against Redlands and then assisted on a Caio Godinho goal in the tie against OLLU. A junior from Spain, Pereira now has 13 goals and six assists in his career at UT Tyler while Godinho now has two goals as he prepared for the third game of his sophomore season. Senior goalkeeper John McGuffin recorded the shutout against the Bulldogs with five saves and now has 14.5 shutouts in his career.

UT Tyler senior Leandro Cid-Fernandez did not score in the first weekend of the season and remains at 30 career goals. A two-time all-region selection, Cid-Fernandez is approaching the UT Tyler record of 33 goals by Barrett Browning for the all-time record in program history. He had three shots in the game against OLLU.

UT Tyler is 0-1 all-time against PLU with a 2-1 double-overtime loss in the second game of the 2015 season in Richardson and will be playing Puget Sound for the first time in program history. The Lutes are 1-2 on the season entering Friday’s game after opening the season with losses against Oglethorpe and Emory in Georgia, but bouncing back with a 4-0 home win over Cal Lutheran at East Field. The Loggers are 0-1 this season after opening their season with a 1-0 loss to Eastern Oregon and will be playing Wheaton College (Illinois) on Friday before hosting the Patriots at Baker Stadium.

The Patriots will return to Texas on Sunday and start preparing for the start of American Southwest Conference play. UTT opens ASC play on Thursday, Sept. 14 against UT Dallas which has won the conference tournament the past two seasons and then hosts Howard Payne on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. UT Dallas (1-1) opened its season with a 2-1 loss against Austin College but bounced back with a 3-0 win over George Fox. The Comets will take on Southwestern on Friday and No. 12 Trinity on Saturday in a pair of games in Abilene before traveling to Tyler for the ASC opener against the Patriots.
