BROWNWOOD -- The UT Tyler men's soccer team got a late-goal from sophomore Alonso Rivera, defeating Howard Payne 1-0 on Saturday evening. With the win, the Patriots are now 9-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in American Southwest Conference play.
The Patriots nearly went 100-minutes without scoring a goal, after finishing in a double-overtime scoreless draw the night before against Hardin-Simmons.
Rivera was able to take possession of the ball in the Jackets (3-9-2, 1-8-1) area, dribble through a couple of defenders and put the ball in the back of-the-net with just five minutes remaining in regulation.
The goal would be all the stingy Patriots would need, after allowing just six total shots, three of which were on goal for Howard Payne.
Senior Chris Powell was aggressive in the win, taking five shots with two on-goal while teammate Enoch Shipman finished with two total shots.
UT Tyler finished the match with 14 total shots, keeping the pressure on a very-good Jackets' defense.
The Patriots will now head home for their final two matches of the season, with Texas Lutheran coming to town on Friday, October 26 at 6 p.m.
