SAN ANTONIO – Lucas Pereira scored a goal in the 62nd minute of play and John McGuffin recorded five saves to lead the UT Tyler men’s soccer team to a 1-0 season-opening win over No. 7-ranked University of the Redlands on Friday at Trinity University.

A junior from Spain, Pereira now has 13 goals and four game-winners in his career with the Patriots after providing the only offensive production needed in the shutout victory over the seventh-ranked team in the nation.

McGuffin earned the shutout in goal for the Patriots after making five saves, with two in the first half and three in the second. UT Tyler’s offense was limited to two shots on goal, but one found the net and was all that was needed. Pereira had two shots on goal for the Patriots and finished with six total shots, while Erik Macias, Mark Guervara and Uriah Shipman had one shot each.

UT Tyler will now play Our Lady of the Lake at 3 p.m. on Sunday to finish a San Antonio road trip before travelling to Tacoma, Washington for a pair of games next weekend.
