TYLER – A string of four road games to start the season begins this weekend as the UT Tyler men’s soccer team travels to San Antonio to play Redlands College and Our Lady of the Lake in a pair of non-conference games.

The Patriots open the 2017 season against Redlands at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in a neutral field game at Trinity University’s pitch before taking on Our Lady of the Lake at 3 p.m. on Sunday on the OLLU campus. UT Tyler, which is coming off another double-digit win season and a trip to the American Southwest Conference Championship semifinals, will continue its season-opening road trip next weekend with a trip to Tacoma, Washington to play Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.

“Our starting point is really good and if this is where we start we have a lot to look forward to,” said UT Tyler head coach Kenny Jones, who is 182-60-32 in 15 seasons leading the program. “We play two really good teams this weekend. They will be a good test for us and give us an idea of what we need to work on. We’re excited to be back and our guys are ready to play. Experience is critical and our good start (in training) is because of the quality of the players we have on the field.”

The Patriots, who are 9-5-1 in season openers, outscored their opponents by a 38-18 margin last season and recorded their 13th double-digit win campaign in program history. The offense was led by Leandro Cid-Fernandez and Lucas Pereira who are both back, along with 13 other returners including all-conference defenders Chris Stamm and Ryan Brinda.

Cid-Fernandez enters his senior season as the ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and is a two-time NSCAA All-Region selection with 30 career goals. An Argentina native, he led the Patriots with 12 goals and seven assists as a junior where he was named the ASC Offensive Player of the Year and the ASC Midfielder of the Year for the second straight season. He had nine goals as a sophomore and freshman and is only three goals from matching Barrett Browning for the program’s all-time goal record.

“Leo is a very talented student and player,” Jones said. “He’s continued to learn and grown over the last few years and has made an impact on our team. He will just need to stay humble and focused on doing his best every day.”

Along with Cid-Fernandez, the Patriots return Pereira who has recorded 12 goals in his first two seasons in Tyler. Pereira is coming off a seven-goal sophomore season where he also assisted on four goals. He has earned NSCAA All-West Region honors in both of his collegiate seasons and is also a two-time ASC first-team selection. Brinda is a junior defender who has played in 30 games for the Patriots. He has scored one goal in each of his first two seasons, along with recording two assists last year as a sophomore.

UT Tyler will open its home and ASC schedule on Thursday, Sept. 14 by hosting UT Dallas and then Howard Payne on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
